The first wine-growing experiments in New York were undertaken in the early-17th century, but the native VITIS species did not produce good wines. Not until 200 years later, when it was discovered that an American Vitis labrusca variety had crossed spontaneously with a European Vitis vinifera variety, was the break through made with deliberately bred hybrids, of which Concord became the best known.

The resistance of American vines, especially Vitis riparia and Vitis rupestris, has been invaluable to the wine industry, providing it with rootstocks that are not susceptible to phylloxera. Most of the vines used to produce fine wines around the world are now grown on American rootstocks.

The winegrowers on the East Coast did not find themselves in a position to improve the quality of their grapes significantly until the 1960s, when the first plantings of French hybrids were successful. Thanks to the optimization of rootstocks, clones, and treatment techniques, European varieties were eventually acclimatized. The Farm Winery Act of 1976 made it possible for small producers to open their own wineries.

Grapes have been cultivated for 300 years in New York with success by having sea air moderating the climate. About 25 mostly small wineries produce wine from hybrids, but are increasingly using Cabernet, Chardonnay, and other European varieties.

Well-known producers in the Long Island region include: Bedell Cellars, Bridgehampton, Gristina, Hargrave, Lenz, Palmer, Peconic Bay, and Pindar Vineyards; in the Finger Lakes region: Canandaigua Wine Company, Four Chimneys Farm, Fox Run, Glenora, Heron Hill, Knapp, Treleaven, and Wagner and Wiemer; on the Hudson River: Benmarl, Brotherhood America's Oldest Winery, Millbrook, and Rivendell.
