Long Island's Wine Country Trophy Case
Wine Awards
An oenophile is a person who loves wine. If you know that already, you most likely also know about wine competitions and rankings and understand the significance of both. If you didn't know what oenophile means, you might need a little education .
Wine awards and wine rankings are assigned by a panel of judges. These judges are deemed to be experienced tasters with the requisite talent, nose, eyes, and taste buds to determine the subtleties of a wide variety of wines. Various local, national, and international competitions are held each year and there is a high degree of prestige attached to the results. Naturally, some are more prestigious than others and just as in all judged competitions, there is often discussion about the judging. Nevertheless, wineries are justifiably proud of awards and Long Island Wines have garnered quite an impressive trophy case.
Rankings are also assigned by panels of judges and are based on a scale of 100. A rating in the 90's is superior; 80's is very good, and so on down the scale. Wine critics of respected publications such as The New York Times, Wine Spectator, and Food & Wine are often part of this ranking system.
Of course, you are the final judge on the value of a wine you buy. If you enjoy it, if you feel the price is fair, and if it fulfills your requirements as a table wine, a party wine, or a special gift wine, then you can award the wine your own value. Consider keeping a wine journal in which you can write your comments about each wine you purchase and taste. Compare your palate to those of the wine critics!
Here is a sampling of some of the award won by LI Wines. It is not complete, and it does not provide detailed information. Please go to the Long Island Wineries for further information.
