About Broadfields Wine Cellars
Description
The story of every winery has two components: the history of the land, and the experiences of the people who come to that land to make wine. At Broadfields, we're proud to be part of one of the longest agricultural traditions in North America. When English settlers first arrived on the North Fork in 1640, they found many large, flat open fields carved out of the dense forest and used as cropland by a native population that had largely disappeared. These expansive and fertile meadows, some of which were known as the Broadfields, became the foundation of a rich agricultural heritage that continues to this day. The human part of the equation isn't quite as ancient as our vineyard lands. Karen and Robin Meredith, the owners of Broadfields, both came to wine after establishing careers in other fields. Karen is an attorney, Robin is a former marketing executive, and we both share a passion for fine wine. During one of our first visits to the North Fork, while attending the Long Island Barrel Tasting and Barbecue in 1992, we decided to turn our avocation into a profession. Despite being captivated by the North Fork, we decided to conduct extensive research into several established and emerging wine regions, including Oregon's Willamette Valley, the western slope of the Colorado Rockies, and the Texas Hill Country. Ultimately, the conclusion was clear: the North Fork offered a unique combination of fine wine potential, an established, supportive industry, and wonderful quality of life. We moved to Long Island in 1994, and purchased land for our estate vineyard in 1997.
