It was in the last millennium that my man and I had our own North Fork Wedding, but it seems like it was yesterday. It’s National Book Lovers Day! How appropriate that a mid-summer day has been designated to encourage the love of the written word. I find it so comforting and relaxing to take a book in hand, settle with a glass of iced tea in a comfy chair—beach chairs are best here—and allow myself to get lost in the pages. It’s not the same experience on an electronic device. Too tempting to check my Facebook feed and email. No, when reading a good novel, paper is the best medium. So, I challenge you to consider taking some time on this day to enjoy a good book. You will be surprisingly glad you did.read more
This mid-summer day has been declared National Watermelon Day, and we definitely are in the mood to celebrate! This sweet, refreshing fruit seems to taste the best when the weather is hot an steamy, but there are many ways to enjoy watermelons year-round and we encourage you to explore the myriad recipes available (Hello Google, Bing and Yahoo!). However, since we live in farm country on the East End, my best tip for selecting a ripe watermelon is a simple one. No slapping or knocking the rind; no hefting it to feel for weight (heavy is better usually). The most reliable way to select a ripe watermelon is a visual test of the bottom—make sure it is yellow and not white. That way you know it is field ripened and guaranteed to be delicious!
