Judy’s Journal–September 20th National Punch Day

Since we are in the business of weddings, parties and other celebrations, we thought it appropriate to showcase National Punch Day. According to many sources found through an Internet search, punch is believed to have originated in India, where it is called panch in Hindi, meaning five for five ingredients. The original five ingredients were alcohol, sugar, water, lemon and tea. Wikipedia says that the it is believed to have been introduce to England in the 17th century.

These days, recipes for punch are varied and versatile, with a wide assortment of alcoholic and non-alocoholic, kid friendly, versions readily available. in general a punch should include fruit juice and another mixer, such as seltzer or soda. In fact, sangria is considered a type of punch. I know it may be sacrilegious to suggest that a party on the North Fork or in the Hamptons not showcase local wines or craft beers, but when you are serving a crowd, a punch is perfect And, you can include a favorite local wine as one of the ingredients.

Judy’s Journal–September 6, 2016 Tumbleweed Tuesday!

Well, it’s time for the Summer of 2016 to take a bow. There were a few too many hazy, hot, humid days for me personally, but the weather in general made for great fun for everyone who had the very good fortune to spend some time in the Hamptons and on the North Fork. If you think the summer is a great time to visit the East End, then be sure to make your way here for harvest season. It seems that the Hamptons take center stage for the summer—with the gorgeous ocean beaches, it’s no surprise—but the North Fork truly shines for the Fall Harvest season. The farmstands are full of their summer bounty, the wineries are releasing their new varietals, and there are pumpkins galore just waiting to be carved into a jack-o-lantern.

Check out our restaurant and lodging pages to find the best eateries and local inns to enjoy a fall visit to the North Fork. And when you are ready to explore beyond the wineries check out East End Bike Tours—they will guide you through the most beautiful parts of this very beautiful part of the East End.

Judy’s Journal Sept. 13–Celebrate National Honey Month!

Did you know that September is National Honey Month? It seems more important than ever to showcase the importance of honey bees and beekeeping as we see the workhorses of nature struggling to survive in recent years. I’m not here to preach about environmental issues today, but I would like to point out that if you enjoy honey, then support of our local beekeepers and honey producers is so important.

Fortunately, on the East End, we have several little farms that do practice beekeeping, and produce delicious honey local to the North Fork and the South Fork. Today we are showcasing Salt Air Farm and North Breeze Farm, two members of the East End Experience and North Fork Weddings network who produce their own honey and offer it for sale as gifts, wedding favors, or just to enjoy.

Judy’s Journal August 29, 2016 — Hampton Classic

Summer 2016 is nearly in the books, with Labor Day weekend just a few days away, and the Hampton Classic now in full swing. This annual Equestrian event started in the 70s as a humble dressage competition, and now it is THE event of the end of the Hamptons summer. Even if you are not entirely into the equestrian activities, it is a fun chance to spot (and maybe rub elbows with) celebrities, and also support the local horseman community. It’s happening all week, and it is indeed a Happening in the Hamptons. Check it out here.

Judy’s Journal–August 22, 2016

It was in the last millennium that my man and I had our own North Fork Wedding, but it seems like it was yesterday. Although much has changed in 18 years, couples who wish to begin their lives together with a celebration on the East End—North Fork or South Fork (that’s means the Hamptons to us locals—LOL) can still enjoy a day very similar to ours. In a few words, keep reading to see what I think made our celebration a perfect one:

Judy’s Journal August 16, 2016–The Four Way Test

I was invited to make a presentation about my photography work to the Greenport Chapter of Rotary International. This organization quietly does so many wonderful things for the local community, and the global one, and requires its members to follow high ethical standards. In this contentious environment we are living in these days, I found the “Four Way Test” to be a wise credo to adopt both personally and professionally. Here it is:

Judy’s Journal August 9, 2016 National Book Lovers Day

It’s National Book Lovers Day! How appropriate that a mid-summer day has been designated to encourage the love of the written word. I find it so comforting and relaxing to take a book in hand, settle with a glass of iced tea in a comfy chair—beach chairs are best here—and allow myself to get lost in the pages. It’s not the same experience on an electronic device. Too tempting to check my Facebook feed and email. No, when reading a good novel, paper is the best medium. So, I challenge you to consider taking some time on this day to enjoy a good book. You will be surprisingly glad you did.
